July 31st-Music for the Lunch Bunch Ella Holding and Dennis de Jong
The next performance scheduled for the Music for the Lunch Bunch series is Thursday, July 31st at 12:15pm at First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield. Ella Ann Holding will perform on Piano and Dennis de Jong will perform on trumpet
Ella Ann Holding is a native of Smithfield, NC. She earned a Bachelor of Music, Cum Laude, from Salem College, where she received the 1996 Distinguished Alumni Award. As a student of Bruce Simons, she acquired a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Yale University School of Music, twice winning the Concerto Composition. With additional study at Juliard School of Music on a scholarship, she studied with Katherine Bacon. Mrs. Holding was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music in London where she studied under Hilda Dederich. Mrs. Holding has performed with the Yale University Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony, the South Carolina Philharmonic, and the Spoleto Festival. Performing in recitals and on numerous concert series in Virginia and the Carolinas, she joins Professor John Adams of the of South Carolina in duo-piano concerts and performs chamber music with the Leros Trio.
Mrs. Holding performs on Albany Records Chamber Music of Hunter Johnson. The late Mr. Johnson was a native of Benson and Composer Laureate of North Carolina. At its 2003 Commencement, Campbell University awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters to Mrs. Holding. She had previously been recognized there, receiving the Presidential Meritorious Award. Mrs. Holding held the first artist-in-residence position there for nine years. Currently, she is serving on the board of trustees for the North Carolina Symphony.
Before coming to reside in Raleigh, North Carolina, Dennis de Jong held the position of Principal Trumpet with Orquesta Sinfonica de Nuevo Leon of Mexico, and 2nd trumpet with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra of Alabama. Mr. de Jong has also performed nationally with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, Erie Philharmonic, Chattanooga Symphony and Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra, among others. Earning his Master of Music from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and his Bachelor of Music from the Shepherd School of Music at Rice University in
Houston, Texas, Mr. de Jong studied with George Vosburgh, James Wilt and Armando Ghitalla. Currently, Mr. de Jong performs regionally as a member of Carolina Brass and the Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle. Additionally, he freelances regularly with the North Carolina Symphony, Opera Company of North Carolina, North Carolina Theater and the Tar River Philharmonic. A dedicated educator, Mr. de Jong has held teaching positions at St. Augustine’s College and Campbell University, serves often as a guest clinician, and most recently has been appointed Music Program Coordinator at Johnston Community College in Smithfield.
The Music for the Lunch Bunch is a series of summer concerts held every Thursday, at 12:15 pm, featuring local artists performing a variety of music, with particular emphasis on classical music. The concert series is grassroots funded by the Johnston County Arts Council and the North Carolina Arts Council. There is no admission charge but donations are accepted.
