April Artists-in-the-Schools Programs

Although the Artists-in-the-Schools program goes till May, April is usually the last big month as schools start winding down for the year.  Because spring break was early this year, this is a busier April than usual.  These events are open to the public and I invite you to attend as these artists are world reknowed.  If you do attend, make sure you share your experience with us!

Allan Wolf

Allan Wolf will perform at South Campus Community on April 1, 2008 at 1:00pm. Allan will perform original and classic poetry that speaks to the young adult.

Bright Star Children’s Theatre will perform “Sadie’s Spectacular Saturday” at McGee’s Crossroads Elementary on April 9, 2008 at 9:15am. Good Judgment, Kindness, friendship and respect are just a handful of the character traits that show up in this theatrical production.

Mike Wiley will perform “Jackie Robinson” at McGee’s Crossroads Middle on April 11, 2008 at 1:30pm. In Mike Wiley’s one man show, Mike Wiley lifts the shawdow of African American segregted athletics from the dark depths of yesteryear into the daylight of a new sports millenium.

Al Simmons will perform at East Clayton Elementary on April 14, 2008 at 9:00am. The principles of sound waves, vibrations, resonnance, and pitch are clearly explained as Al plays his bizarre homemade versions of stringed, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments.

Howard Craft will conduct a week-long writer’s residency at Smithfield-Selma High on April 14-18, 2008. “Poetry for Life” is a five-day residency where students learn to explore their everyday experiences by partaking in a guided tour of the writing process.

Seona McDowell

Seona McDowell will perform at West Clayton Elementary on April 15, 2008 at 9:00am and 10:15am. This lively program celebrates the similarties and differences of cultures and people around the world and teaches us through music and stories how to be a good world citizen, respecting each other’s cultures and planet.

Ariana Ross will perform at West Smithfield Elementary on April 16, 2008 at 9:00am and 10:00am. Arianna Ross takes students on a trip around the world in forty-five minutes, exporing the streets of the United States, Indonesia, and Mexico and discovering the many differences and similarities between these diverse countries.

Cong Yuan will conduct an Asian Calligraphy workshop at McGee’s Crossroads Middle on April 17, 2008. In this day long workshop, Cong Yuan will introduce the technique of and teach students how to create Asian Calligraphy.

Grey Seal Puppets will perform at Micro-Pine Level Elementary on April 22, 2008 at 9:00am and 10:15am. Grey Seal Puppets present three tales from around the world that feature a variety of puppet styles, including “The Frog Prince,” “Billy Goats Gruff,” and “The Three Little Pigs.”

Theater IV will present “I Have a Dream” at Cleveland Middle on April 22, 2008. This compelling dramatization of the life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights movement will inspire students as they experience this great leader’s struggle and his dream of lifting “our nation from the quicksand of racial injustice to the solid rock of brotherhood.”

A Show of Virtues

Grey Seal Puppets will perform at Meadow Elementary on April 24, 2008 at 1:00pm. Grey Seal Puppets peform “A Show of Virtues,” which help students recognize and put into practice some of life’s most important virtues:courage, perseverance, politeness, and tolerance.
