What defines success?

My FrustrationLast night we had our first event in our Spring Lecture Series, a Dance Workshop with Even Exchange Dance Company.  I could have done a better job at marketing it (always room for improvement, afterall), but we put up about 50 flyers around the county, I sent out umpteen notices on my weekly newsletter (and that hits around 1,700 people), press releases in the local paper, blog entries here, bulletins on MySpace….

Ten people attended the workshop.  It was the first event in a new program with what some may consider a intimidating artistic discipline=modern dance.  I’m actually pleased that 10 showed up because at 6:20pm last night I only had 2 and before that I was afraid I may have ZERO!

My question is:  Was this a successful event?  The argument is that the Arts Council reached 10 new people and helped fulfill our mission of providing quality arts opportunities to the residents of Johnston County.  However, I tend to get frustrated in how to get the word out about the organization and its events, especially with such a limited marketing budget.  Combined with many people’s increasing desire to stay home in the evenings, its tough to get people to come out, even when they do know about an event.

I think next week’s lecture on Whistler’s mother is going to be better attended as I’ve heard many more people talking about that.  And then I’ve got awhile to promote the poetry workshop in April, which I think will be very successful since its with the NC Poet Laureate.  I’ll just keep at it, plugging away, at least offering things to the people so that they can’t say the Arts Council doesn’t try!
